Airport Development
Paraparaumu Airport is a 126-hectare domestic aviation centre with a blank canvas of business opportunities unparalleled elsewhere in the region. Owners, Paraparaumu Airport Holdings Ltd, have a 30-year master development plan with a projected value of $450m.
The rezoning of the airport, completed in early 2010, has created 41 hectares for core aviation related activities and a 71-hectare Business Park supporting commercial, retail and industrial activities. These will be delivered with high quality design requirements for buildings and landscapes. The whole development will be surrounded by a 14 hectare eco-buffer.
Managing director of PAHL, Sir Noel Robinson, is a developer who comes with a well-known track record of delivering high quality, environmentally pleasing business parks.
The aviation core includes a new airport terminal currently under design in conjunction with runway upgrades and negotiations with Air New Zealand to start scheduled flights to Auckland using a Q300 50-seater. It aims to service a catchment of 110,000 people from Levin to Porirua with an initial passenger load of 94,000 per year.
The upgrade will enhance existing passenger services to Wellington, Blenheim and Nelson provided by Air2There. Other operators include Helipro Aviation Training and Kapiti Aero Club which train students. Gliders are frequent users. Paraparaumu will also act as a secondary airport for domestic use if Wellington Airport is closed.
Located in a prominent site adjacent to residential areas and major roading links the extensive the 71-hectare Business Park is an exciting mixed-use zone with stipulated high quality design requirements for all buildings.
The Park will accommodate aviation service activities, one hotel or motel, industrial, trade and wholesale activities. Transport links especially to the proposed Sandhills Expressway makes it ideally sited for logistics and distribution, industrial and warehousing activities. Large format retail, home improvement retail as well as automotive and marine equipment retail can also be accommodated.
A further 14 hectares set aside as a buffer zone introduces another canvass. Defined by an Environmental Management Plan the natural landscape of stream, wetlands and low sand dunes are complimented with high quality eco-designed stormwater systems and conservation. It will provide a network of open spaces, boardwalks, walkways, cycleways and bridleways.
