Nature Coast Board Profiles


Graham Smellie (elected member) - Chairman
Graham is a long-term Levin resident who was the Founding Board Chairman of Enterprise Horowhenua in 1994 and has been on Nature Coast's Board since its inception.  A senior manager at Crop & Food Research, he has played an important role in economic development of the region.  Graham is proud of his role in Nature Coast's governance.

Ewen Paynter (elected member)
Ewen has been a Board member since 2005 and is a member of the Audit Committee.  He is a strong supporter of the Nature Coast region, believing in the concept of combining efforts to promote local tourism and economic development.  Ewen has played a role as a Board member in the development of the textile Major Regional Initiative and the Olympic uniform bids.  He is the Treasurer of Age Concern (Horowhenua) Incorporated.

Justine Street (elected member)
Justine lives at Foxton Beach where she has resided for the majority of my life.  She completed her secondary education at Manawatu College then attended Massey University in Palmerston North where she graduated with a Bachelor of Business Studies and Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Accounting. Justine's first appointment as an Accountant was in Wellington where she worked for a corporate accounting firm for three years and obtained her Chartered Accountancy. In 2003 she joined the team at Colbert Cooper Ltd and in 2008 she became an owner. She enjoys providing business advice to small and medium sized businesses to enable them to achieve their business and personal goals.

Kate Gibbs, Stanmore Farm (Board appointment)

Kate is CEO, Stanmore Farm, a horticultural business employing 20 people.  It consists of a grapevine nursery, pip and berryfruit orchard and a commercial jam kitchen.  It develops and manages vineyards such as Bishops Vineyard in Ohau.  A viticulturist by trade, Kate has a BHortSc from Lincoln University specialising in marketing and management.  Kate joined MAF as an advisor and then specialised in viticulture by working with pre-eminent viticultural scientist Dr Richard Smart , before going on to Corbans Wines as Company Viticulturist.

John Barrett, Kapiti Island Alive (Board appointment)
John is managing director of Kapiti Island Alive & Kapiti Nature Lodge, a family tourism operation based on Kapiti Island.  John is currently Chairman of the NZ Maori Tourism Council and a Director of the Wellington Regional Maori Tourism organisation.  He sits on the Board of Tourism New Zealand, The Aviation Tourism & Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO) and a number of non-tourism related organisations.  John's primary interests are tourism, Maori and International Indigenous Tourism development, community and economic development.
