Kapiti Coast District Council is subsidising memberships of the Rata Sustainable Certification Programme for 10 local Kapiti Coast businesses.

The Rata programme focuses on supporting businesses to become a catalyst for change for the future and encourages business owners and staff to be involved in driving those changes. It offers an independent, affordable and achievable certification process for any business wanting to incorporate sustainability initiatives.

Kapiti Island Wins Rankers Traveller Award

On August 17 Rankers announced the winners of their 2010 online awards, as voted by overseas and NZ holiday makers.
Kapiti Island Alive won the NZ Wide Bird Watching category, for the second time in two years. John Barrett (Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Āti Awa, and Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga), co-owner and operator of Kapiti Island Alive, and resident of Kapiti Island, says winning the award means recognition of much hard work. "I'm very proud of our team and product," he says.

Business survey shows that local businesses are optimistic about the future, albeit cautious.

The 2010 Annual Regional Business Survey of Kapiti Horowhenua businesses conducted in June indicates a core level of confidence in the local economy within the business community. The survey of 166 respondents shows they are marginally more confident in the stability of the regional economy than the national economy. But they expect the national economy to improve significantly more compared to expectations last year.

Nature Coasters remain optimistic

Nature Coast Enterprise recently surveyed 1,572 Kapiti and Horowhenua businesses to assess business confidence and solicit views on the services offered by Nature Coast Enterprise.

Glen O’Brien, CEO of Nature Coast said “results of the survey indicated business optimism about the local and national economy. The results are encouraging as many of our businesses service local or regional markets that are potentially less affected by the recession swirling around them.  Many respondents were from established businesses so we thank them for letting us know of their position as their views are helpful to gauge future business activity.”

Kapiti Island's Kaitiaki o Kapiti Trust announced today that writer Kelly Joseph (Ngati Maniapoto) will be Kapiti Island's resident writer during Matariki (Maori New Year) this year.
The 'Tau mai e Kapiti' Maori Writers' Residency 2009, funded by Te Waka Toi / Creative New Zealand and hosted by Kaitiaki o Kapiti Trust, allows an up-and-coming Maori writer to live and work on the northern end of Kapiti island for eight weeks.
